How do I make frothed milk at home?
There are a few different options how to make frothed milk at home:
- If you have a milk frother that also heats, froth the milk until hot.
- Add the milk to a small saucepan and heat over medium-high heat. Whisk constantly until frothy and steaming.
- You can also place milk in the microwave and heat it to make it hot, stirring occasionally so it doesn't burn. Use a whisk or fork and mix it until frothy.
Ingredients
This peppermint mocha is made with basic ingredients that are easy to find at your local grocery store.

- Sweet mocha sauce – made with cocoa, white sugar, and hot water. You can also use chocolate syrup like you would pour over ice cream.
- Espresso - made with Starbucks Espresso coffee in my espresso machine. Without an espresso machine, you can make espresso at home for your favorite coffee using strong coffee, regular coffee, or instant coffee.
- Peppermint simple syrup - made with a 2:1 ratio of water and sugar, along with mint extract. I used the Watkins brand which has the natural flavors of both peppermint and spearmint. The peppermint extract is sold out and I was unable to find it anywhere. If you use peppermint extract, it may be stronger so you don't need to use as much.
- Milk - heated and frothed. I used regular frothy milk (2%) to make this recipe. Feel free to use whatever milk you like. Some options are dairy milk such as 1% milk, nonfat milk, whole milk, half-and-half, or heavy cream. You could also use non-dairy milk like oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. The less milk fat, the foamier the milk gets.
- Whipped cream - I used Dairyland whipped cream, but you could also make homemade whipped cream with heavy whipping cream. To do this, whip ¼ cup heavy cream with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Add ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract and ½ tablespoon of maple syrup and whip until combined
- Optional toppings of chocolate sauce, chocolate shavings, chocolate curls, mini chocolate chips, or decorate with a crushed candy cane.
