🍨 What is a Ninja Creami?

If you're not familiar with it, you may be wondering, "What is a Ninja Creami?" Essentially, it's a compact and powerful kitchen appliance that you can use to quickly and easily whip up a frozen treat like ice cream, sorbet, a smoothie bowl, and more.

The Ninja Creami is perfect for those who want to make homemade ice cream without the need for a bulky, expensive ice cream maker. It's a great investment for anyone who loves to experiment in the kitchen and create their own sweet treats.

With a Ninja Creami, you can make a variety of dessert recipes with just a few simple ingredients - like this delicious coffee ice cream recipe.

💗 Why You Will Love This Recipe

    • Rich coffee flavor: Instant coffee gives this ice cream a robust flavor that coffee lovers will appreciate.
    • Creamy and smooth: Heavy cream makes this sweet treat lusciously creamy and smooth.
    • Versatility: This coffee ice cream is delicious served as is, or you can use it in various desserts. You can use it to make affogatos, milkshakes, or homemade ice cream sandwiches.
    • Homemade goodness: Making ice cream from scratch gives you the satisfaction of creating a homemade treat with real ingredients and flavors that surpass store-bought ice cream.
    • Refreshing and indulgent: This combination of coffee and cream is the perfect pick-me-up on a warm day or a deliciously decadent dessert after a long day.
    • Impressive presentation: Serving homemade ice cream, especially with a distinct flavor like coffee, will impress your guests.
    • Customizable toppings and mix-ins: The recipe allows for endless creativity when it comes to toppings and mix-ins. You can personalize your ice cream with chocolate chips, crushed cookies, crushed nuts, or caramel sauce.

    🥛 Ingredient Notes + Substitutions

To make this Ninja CREAMi frozen concoction, you just need a handful of basic ingredients.

The ingredients for Ninja Creami coffee ice cream measured out in small white bowls and placed on a wooden countertop.
    • Heavy cream. Heavy cream is my go-to for that luxurious, velvety texture, but you can always substitute it with half-and-half or coconut cream.
    • Milk. I found that using whole milk gives a rich and creamy consistency. However, I have successfully made this recipe with oat milk, coconut milk, and almond milk. If you use these lighter kinds of milk along with coconut cream, use the LITE ICE CREAM button instead.
    • Powdered sugar. I sweeten the ice cream with powdered sugar as it blends perfectly into the liquid. You can also use agave nectar, monk fruit sweetener, maple syrup, or honey.
    • Instant coffee. To enhance the flavor of the coffee ice cream, I love using instant espresso powder. If you want a less intense coffee flavor, use regular instant coffee granules instead. You can also add a bit of cocoa powder for a mocha ice cream flavor.
    • Vanilla. Vanilla extract adds an extra layer of flavor. You can also use vanilla bean paste for a more sophisticated taste.

See the printable recipe card for quantities and a complete list of ingredients.

    🥄 Equipment

To make this easy vanilla ice cream recipe, you will need:

    • Ninja Creami Pint Container (I buy extra pint containers, so I always have some ready to go).
    • Ninja Creami machine

🍨 How To Make Ninja Creami Coffee Ice Cream

First things first, add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, powdered sugar, instant coffee, and milk to a measuring glass or a Ninja Creami pint container. Use a whisk to combine the ingredients.

The ingredients for the coffee ice cream mixed together in a measuring cup.

Pour the mixture into the pint container (if not already in one). Place the lid on the pint jar and place it in the freezer (make sure it is on a level surface) for 24 hours.

Tip: You want the ingredients up to the fill line, not past it.

When you are ready for your ice cream, remove the pint from the freezer and take off the lid.

Place the pint container in the outer bowl. Secure the outer bowl lid so that it clicks into place. Place the bowl assembly onto the base of the Ninja Creami and turn the handle to the right to lock it in place.

Push the ICE CREAM button on the control panel. Allow the machine to run for the full cycle - about 2 minutes. Once the machine is done churning, turn off the Ninja Creami and remove the container from the base.

If the ice cream looks dry and crumbly (like below), reattach the lid and select the RE-SPIN button to process the mixture again.

The ice cream should look smooth and creamy when done.

    • Make an affogato: Pour a shot of espresso over a scoop of coffee ice cream for a delicious affogato.
    • Drizzle with caramel or fudge sauce: Add a sweet and gooey touch to your ice cream by drizzling it with caramel or fudge sauce.
    • Top with whipped cream: Add a dollop of whipped cream on top of your ice cream for a creamy and decadent treat.
    • Sprinkle with chopped nuts: Add a crunchy texture to your ice cream by sprinkling it with chopped nuts, such as almonds or hazelnuts.
    • Serve with chocolate shavings: Use a vegetable peeler to shave thin curls of chocolate over the top of your ice cream.
    • Pair with cookies: Sandwich a scoop of coffee ice cream between two cookies, such as chocolate chip or oatmeal, for an ice cream sandwich.

    💭 Expert Tips

    • Use espresso powder for a rich coffee flavor: Instant espresso powder is a simple way to enhance the coffee flavor in your ice cream. It adds a robust and bold flavor that coffee lovers will appreciate.
    • Use heavy or whipping cream for a rich and creamy texture: Heavy cream or whipping cream is the key to achieving a rich and creamy texture in your ice cream. The high-fat content helps to create a smooth and velvety consistency.
    • Avoid overfilling the pint container: Be sure to only fill the pint container up to the FILL LINE. Overfilling the container can lead to uneven freezing and may cause the mixture to overflow during churning.
    • Chill for at least 24 hours before churning: Chilling the mixture for a minimum of 24 hours before churning is essential for optimal results. This ensures that the mixture is thoroughly chilled and ready to be churned into ice cream.
    • Ensure the pint container sits on a level surface in the freezer: To prevent the mixture from spilling or freezing unevenly, make sure that the pint container sits on a level surface in the freezer.
    • Add mix-ins after churning: If you want to add mix-ins like chocolate chips or nuts to your ice cream, add them after churning. Press the MIX-IN button to incorporate them evenly into the ice cream.
    • Garnish: For an indulgent treat, garnish your ice cream with your favorite toppings. Whipped cream, chopped nuts, chocolate-covered coffee beans, hot fudge sauce, or caramel sauce are all great options to take your ice cream to the next level.

    ❓ Recipe FAQs

Will this Ninja Creami ice cream leave a film in my mouth?

No, this recipe will not. It does not contain cream cheese, and as a result, the ice cream is smooth and creamy and will not leave a waxy film in your mouth.

Do you have to wait 24 hours to use Ninja CREAMi?

Yes, unfortunately, you do. I tried churning it at about 20 hours, and it didn't churn up properly.

Can you put Ninja Creami ice cream back in the freezer?

Yes, you can put it back in the freezer. If you have leftovers, just smooth them down with the back of a spoon, smooth a layer of plastic wrap over the top of the ice cream, and place the lid back on.

Why did my Ninja CREAMi come out crumbly?

If your freezer is too cold, your ice cream may come out crumbly. This sometimes happens in my chest freezer, but not my fridge freezer. Place it back in the machine and press the RE-SPIN button to process it again.

Can I make two batches of ice cream back to back?

Absolutely! The Ninja Creami is able to make batches of ice cream back to back with no problems!

Three scoops of coffee ice cream topped with a sprinkle of coffee beans.
