Smoked chex mix piled high in a glass bowl, with a tray in the background. this …

I am so excited to share with you one of my favorite snacks - this homemade nuts and bolts snack mix recipe. I have been making it for years and years in the oven, and each time I make it, it disappears quickly.

Because I like trying out new recipes on my pellet smoker, I decided to put my own delicious twist on it and roast this tasty snack in the electric smoker instead of the oven.

It doesn't matter if you have a Traeger grill, Masterbuilt smoker, or Pit Boss; this recipe will work on any one of them.

Smoked Chex is a crunchy, savory snack that’s perfect for game day, family movie night, or just an afternoon pick-me-up.

And, I am happy to say, this turned out to be a great idea. I will warn you, though, this recipe is completely addicting.

Best of all, this snack mix can easily be made ahead of time.

Simply make the Chex party mix according to the recipe below and store it in an airtight container until you're ready to serve.

Plus, it's a great holiday food gift idea - just package it up in a cute jar or tin and add a bow. It's sure to be a hit at your next Christmas party!

This is a favorite of both young and old, and I always make sure I have lots on hand for Christmas celebrations.

I love to serve it at holiday parties with Christmas Crack with Graham Crackers, Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, Gingersnap Cookies, Puff Pastry Christmas Trees, Christmas Muddy Buddies, and Christmas Fudge.

    🥨 Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is made with simple ingredients that you can easily find at your local grocery store.

The ingredients for the chex mix measured out and placed on a white wooden table.
    • Chex. I used Honey Nut Chex, but you can use Corn Chex or Rice Chex.
    • Cheerios. I used Honey Nut Cheerios, but you can use any kind of Cheerios you like.
    • Wheat Chex. I used Honey Shreddies, which I was surprised to find out are only available in Canada. But, no worries, Shreddies are equal to Wheat Chex, which everyone has access to who lives in the United States.
    • Pretzels. I used a combination of twists, sticks, and waffle pretzels. You can use any kind you like, including bite-sized pretzels.
    • Peanuts. I used lightly salted peanuts. I do not recommend unsalted peanuts, they won't have as much flavor.
    • Butter. I used unsalted butter, but you could also use margarine instead.
    • Worcestershire sauce. This adds amazing flavor to the snack mix.
    • Seasoning salt. This adds much better flavor than just table salt or kosher salt.

See the printable recipe card for exact measurements and a full list of ingredients.

    🥜 Optional Add-Ins

Feel free to add or omit any ingredients. Some great options for add-ins are:

    • Use different cereals like Life, Cornbran, or Cap'n Crunch.
    • Add different nuts like almonds, cashews, or mixed nuts.
    • Add some cheesy crackers like Cheez-Its or Goldfish crackers
    • Bugles or bagel chips are also great additions!
    • Add different spices like garlic powder, onion powder, celery salt, or smoked paprika. You can also use your favorite BBQ rub. My homemade Smoked Chicken Rub tastes great in this recipe! Just a little will do!
    • If you want a spicy Chex mix, add a dash of hot sauce or a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.

    🥣 Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Preheat the smoker to 225 degrees F.

Step 2: Combine dry ingredients. First, measure out the Cheerios, Chex, and Shreddies cereal. Place them in a large mixing bowl. Next, add the peanuts to the large bowl.

The peanuts added to the large mixing bowl with the different kinds of cereal.

Add the pretzels to the bowl.

Step 3: Make the seasoning. Melt butter in a small saucepan on medium heat. Mix in Worcestershire sauce and salt. Remove the saucepan from heat. Pour the melted butter mixture over the cereal and other ingredients. Toss everything together with a spatula until the mixture is evenly coated. Make sure to stir well.

Spread the Chex mix evenly between two large baking sheets.

Pro Tip: I recommend placing parchment on a large baking sheet before adding the party mix. This will prevent any sticking. You can also use a disposable pan to make cleanup a breeze.

The seasoned Chex mix spread evenly on two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

Next, place the baking sheets on the pellet grill, and bake the Chex mix for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Remove from the smoker, and place on paper towels to absorb any excess butter. Allow the mix to cool completely before you dig in.

    Enjoy!

    💭 Expert Tips

    • Place parchment paper on the baking sheets to prevent sticking.
    • Stir the Chex mix every 15 minutes.
    • Don't rush the process. Smoking the Chex requires low heat over a longer period of time; this allows the smoke flavor to fully permeate each piece without burning it.
    • Don't overfill your pan - too much food can lead to soggy Chex that don't retain their crunchy texture.
    • If you are giving this snack away as a gift, let the nuts and bolts cool to room temperature before wrapping or storing in a container.
