Ingredients
Only a few ingredients are required to make this delicious BBQ chicken pizza. So let's gather them up!

- pizza dough - I use my own homemade pizza dough that is made from flour, yeast, water, sugar, salt, and oil. No time to make dough? Use a tube of pizza dough or pre-made pizza crust. You can also use naan bread or 3 Ingredient Flatbread and make individual pizzas! Flatbread BBQ chicken pizza is so good!
- cooked chicken, shredded - I cook chicken in the Instant Pot, and by the time the dough is ready the chicken is cooked. If you want to speed up the time even further, use a rotisserie chicken from the store.
- red onion, diced - I like red onion for it's sweeter and milder taste, but you can use your favorite onion
- BBQ sauce - I use our favorite sweet and spicy BBQ sauce, feel free to use your favorite kind!
- mozzarella cheese, shredded - I buy mozzarella cheese and shred it myself in the food processor. The shredded cheese in the bag at the store has extra additives to prevent the cheese from sticking together.
- cilantro, optional, for garnish

How to make homemade bbq chicken pizza
Let's get started! To make this barbecue chicken pizza recipe, first, we need to make the dough. If you use my fail-proof recipe, it makes 2 large pizzas. The pizza dough freezes really well too.
For detailed instructions on how to make pizza dough, check out the recipe.
Start by proofing the yeast in a measuring cup with water, sugar, and yeast. Combine the flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and oil. Stir with a wooden spoon until it is all mixed in. Knead until dough is a soft and smooth ball. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

Grab some cooked chicken, or cook chicken breasts in the Instant Pot for 15 minutes. Shred chicken. Toss shredded chicken with BBQ sauce until it is distributed evenly.

Roll out pizza dough and place on pizza pan. Spread BBQ sauce evenly over the pizza crust.

Add shredded chicken, diced onion, and top with mozzarella cheese. Are you a fan of lots of melty cheese? Then go ahead, add some more. 🙂

Place the pizza in a preheated oven and bake until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted on top.
That's all there is to it! Top with cilantro for garnish, slice into pieces, and enjoy!
Hint: Let the pizza rise for 10-15 minutes after placing it in the pizza pan for a thicker crust pizza. If you like thin crust pizza, don't allow any rise time; prepare the pizza right away.

Store cooked pizza in the fridge in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
Store cooked pizza in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
Top tips
- Feel free to purchase premade pizza dough or use naan bread for individual pizzas if you like.
- You can also use rotisserie chicken to save on time.
- Do not skip covering the chicken in BBQ sauce before placing it on the pizza, trust me. If you don't add the sauce, it is really bland. The sauce on the chicken really elevates the flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes!!! You must cook the chicken before putting it on the pizza! Raw chicken will not have enough time to cook, so always use cooked chicken on pizza. You can either chop it or shred it.
To keep the chicken from drying out, mix it with BBQ sauce before adding it to the pizza.
The perfect temperature for cooking homemade pizza at home is 450 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.
