    Ingredients

Only a few ingredients are required to make this delicious BBQ chicken pizza. So let's gather them up!

Ingredients for fresh homemade BBQ pizza, mozzarella cheese, cooked chicken, pizza dough, BBQ sauce, and red onion with cilantro in the background
    • pizza dough - I use my own homemade pizza dough that is made from flour, yeast, water, sugar, salt, and oil. No time to make dough? Use a tube of pizza dough or pre-made pizza crust. You can also use naan bread or 3 Ingredient Flatbread and make individual pizzas! Flatbread BBQ chicken pizza is so good!
    • cooked chicken, shredded - I cook chicken in the Instant Pot, and by the time the dough is ready the chicken is cooked. If you want to speed up the time even further, use a rotisserie chicken from the store.
    • red onion, diced - I like red onion for it's sweeter and milder taste, but you can use your favorite onion
    • BBQ sauce - I use our favorite sweet and spicy BBQ sauce, feel free to use your favorite kind!
    • mozzarella cheese, shredded - I buy mozzarella cheese and shred it myself in the food processor. The shredded cheese in the bag at the store has extra additives to prevent the cheese from sticking together.
    • cilantro, optional, for garnish

See the recipe card for quantities.

How to make homemade bbq chicken pizza

Let's get started! To make this barbecue chicken pizza recipe, first, we need to make the dough. If you use my fail-proof recipe, it makes 2 large pizzas. The pizza dough freezes really well too.

For detailed instructions on how to make pizza dough, check out the recipe.

Start by proofing the yeast in a measuring cup with water, sugar, and yeast. Combine the flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and oil. Stir with a wooden spoon until it is all mixed in. Knead until dough is a soft and smooth ball. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

knead dough to a smooth round bowl

Grab some cooked chicken, or cook chicken breasts in the Instant Pot for 15 minutes. Shred chicken. Toss shredded chicken with BBQ sauce until it is distributed evenly.

Roll out pizza dough and place on pizza pan. Spread BBQ sauce evenly over the pizza crust.

Add shredded chicken, diced onion, and top with mozzarella cheese. Are you a fan of lots of melty cheese? Then go ahead, add some more. 🙂

Place the pizza in a preheated oven and bake until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted on top.

That's all there is to it! Top with cilantro for garnish, slice into pieces, and enjoy!

Hint: Let the pizza rise for 10-15 minutes after placing it in the pizza pan for a thicker crust pizza. If you like thin crust pizza, don't allow any rise time; prepare the pizza right away.

    BBQ Chicken Pizza Toppings

Make this pizza your own by changing up the toppings! Here are some tasty ideas!

    • Jalapeno peppers, diced
    • Mushrooms, sliced
    • Bacon, crumbled
    • Pineapple, diced
    • Bell peppers, diced

    Equipment

I love my pizza pans for perfectly cooked crusts, and pizza cutters make slicing pizza a breeze!

    Storage

Store cooked pizza in the fridge in an airtight container for 3-4 days.

Store cooked pizza in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 2 months.

    Top tips

    • Feel free to purchase premade pizza dough or use naan bread for individual pizzas if you like.
    • You can also use rotisserie chicken to save on time.
    • Do not skip covering the chicken in BBQ sauce before placing it on the pizza, trust me. If you don't add the sauce, it is really bland. The sauce on the chicken really elevates the flavor.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do you cook chicken before putting it on pizza?

Yes!!! You must cook the chicken before putting it on the pizza! Raw chicken will not have enough time to cook, so always use cooked chicken on pizza. You can either chop it or shred it.

How do you keep chicken from drying out on pizza?

To keep the chicken from drying out, mix it with BBQ sauce before adding it to the pizza.

What temperature should you cook homemade pizza at?

The perfect temperature for cooking homemade pizza at home is 450 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.

    Equipment

    • Non-Stick Round Pizza Pan
    • Non-Stick Rectangle Pizza Pan
    • Pizza cutter and lifter

    Ingredients

Pizza Dough - See detailed recipe on Homemade Pizza Dough; this recipe makes enough for 2 pizzas

    • 2 cups warm water
    • 4 teaspoon yeast
    • 2 teaspoon sugar
    • 5 cups flour
    • 4 tablespoon olive oil
    • 2 teaspoon salt

    BBQ Chicken Pizza

    • 1 cup barbecue sauce
    • 2 cups cooked chicken shredded
    • ½ cup red onion diced
    • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
    • cilantro optional garnish

    Instructions

Make the dough: See detailed instructions in my Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe

    • Measure warm water into a small bowl. Add the yeast and sugar, stir gently with a whisk or spoon, and sit for 5 minutes. It should be foamy on top. Combine the flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon or the dough hook on a stand mixer. Knead it on a lightly floured counter for a few minutes until you have a smooth, round ball. Place the dough in a bowl. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for 15-20 minutes.

Cook the chicken: See detailed instructions in my Instant Pot Chicken Breasts Recipe

    • To cook chicken in the Instant Pot, add chicken to the pressure cooker, fresh or frozen, and cook on high pressure for 15 minutes. After the cooking time is up, let it naturally release - Shred chicken on a plate or cutting board with 2 forks.

    Assemble:

    • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Line a pizza pan or baking sheet with parchment paper. The dough should be double its size. Roll out dough with a rolling pin to fit the size of the pizza pan. Transfer carefully to a lined pan.
    • Add a few spoonfuls of BBQ sauce to the cooked chicken and mix to coat evenly.
    • Spread the barbecue sauce evenly on the pizza crust. Then, evenly sprinkle the chicken, red onion, and cheese over the pizza.

    Bake:

    • Bake the pizza for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Top with fresh cilantro if you like, and enjoy immediately!
