Ingredients
- 2 cups white rice such as jasmine or basmati
- 2 cups cold water
- pinch of salt optional
Instructions
- Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water is mostly clear. Drain well.
- Add the rinsed rice, cold water, and salt, if using, to the Instant Pot.
- Secure the lid and turn the valve to the Sealing position. Select Pressure Cook (or Manual) on High Pressure for 5 minutes.
- When the cooking time is complete, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes. Carefully release any remaining pressure, then open the lid.
- Fluff the rice gently with a fork and serve.
Notes
- Rice-to-water ratio: For jasmine, basmati, and other long-grain white rice, use a 1:1 ratio of rice to water. For example, use 1 cup water for 1 cup rice or 2 cups water for 2 cups rice.
- Rinse the rice: Rinse under cold running water until the water is mostly clear, then drain well. This removes excess starch and helps keep the rice fluffy instead of gummy.
- For more flavor: You can replace the water with chicken broth.
- Natural release: After pressure cooking, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then release any remaining pressure before opening the lid.
- Brown rice: Pressure cook on High for 25 minutes, followed by a natural pressure release.
- Wild rice: Use 1½ cups liquid for every 1 cup wild rice. Pressure cook on High for 30 minutes, followed by a natural pressure release.
- Cooking larger batches: Keep the same rice-to-water ratio when increasing the amount of white rice. The pressure cooking time stays the same; the Instant Pot will simply take longer to come to pressure.
- Storage: Cool leftovers promptly and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
