🍹 What Is The Best Tequila For A Margarita?
The best tequila for a margarita is typically a high-quality, 100% agave tequila labeled as "Silver" or "Blanco." These tequilas are unaged or aged for a short period, allowing their pure agave flavors to shine.
A tequila Reposado is also 100% agave and can be good in a margarita. Reposado tequila is aged for at least two months but no more than a year in oak barrels, giving it a slightly more complex flavor than a Blanco tequila. This can add a subtle sweetness and notes of vanilla and caramel to the margarita, which some people like.
Some may find that the aged flavor of a Reposado tequila may be less prominent when mixed with other ingredients in a margarita. For more detailed information, check out this article on Blanco Vs Reposado for Margarita.
🍓 Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
To make the perfect strawberry margarita on the rocks, you will need a handful of simple ingredients:

- Tequila is the most important ingredient in this cocktail as it is the base spirit. Look for a Blanco tequila (white tequila), also called Silver Tequila. I used 1800 Blanco tequila.
- Triple Sec is a sweet orange liqueur used as a secondary flavor to enhance the overall taste of the cocktail. It helps to balance the tartness of the lime juice. You can also use Cointreau or Grand Marnier instead.
- Fresh strawberries provide a sweet, fruity flavor and give the drink a reddish-pink color. Make sure your strawberries are ripe and sweet for the best flavor. Frozen strawberries can also be used if fresh ones are not available.
- Fresh lime juice is acidic and adds tartness to the drink while also balancing the sweetness of the drink to create a tangy flavor. Freshly squeezed lime juice will give the best flavor. Avoid bottled lime juice, as it will not be as flavorful.
- Simple syrup is a sweetener that balances the tartness of the lime juice in this drink. This can be made at home by combining equal parts sugar and water and heating until the sugar dissolves. Alternatively, you can use store-bought simple syrup, agave syrup or agave nectar, or honey as a substitute for simple syrup.
- Sugar and salt on the rim of the glass provide a contrasting flavor to the sweetness and sourness of the drink and helps to balance out the overall taste. Use granulated sugar and coarse salt for the rim of the glass. Kosher salt or sea salt both work well.
- Ice: Use plenty of ice to keep the drink cold and refreshing.

🍹 How To Make A Strawberry Margarita On The Rocks
To make the perfect strawberry margarita on the rocks, wash and dry the fresh strawberries and cut off the green stem.
Mix together the coarse salt and granulated sugar in a small bowl. Sprinkle it on a plate wide enough for your glass to fit.
Rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge, then dip the rim of the glass into the sugar and salt mixture to create a salt rim. Set the glass aside.

Combine the strawberries, lime juice, tequila, triple sec, and simple syrup in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Taste the mixture and adjust the sweetness to your personal preference, adding more simple syrup as desired. The amount needed will depend on the sweetness of your strawberries.
Fill the glasses with ice, then pour in the strawberry margarita mixture.
Garnish each glass with a lime wedge or lime wheel and a fresh strawberry. Serve immediately.
Enjoy!

💭 Expert Tips
- Use fresh and ripe strawberries: Fresh and ripe strawberries have a higher concentration of sugars and juices, which will give your margarita a more intense strawberry flavor.
- Use quality tequila: The better the quality of your tequila, the better your margarita will taste. Look for 100% agave tequila for a cleaner and smoother taste.
- Use freshly squeezed lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice provides the best flavor for your margarita. Avoid bottled lime juice, which tastes artificial and lacks fresh flavor.
- Chill your glasses: Chill your glasses in the freezer for at least 20 minutes before making your margarita. This will help keep your drink cold longer and prevent it from getting watery.
- Adjust the sweetness and sourness to your liking: Taste your margarita before serving and add more simple syrup or lime juice if desired.
- Experiment with garnishes: Garnishes can enhance the visual appeal of your margarita and add an extra layer of flavor. Try garnishing with a lime wedge and a strawberry slice - even a cocktail umbrella!
- Don't overdo the sugar/salt rim: A sugar/salt rim adds a nice contrast to the sweet and sour flavors of the margarita, but don't overdo it, as it can overpower the other flavors in the drink.
- Serve immediately: Margaritas taste best when fresh and cold, so serve your drinks as soon as they are prepared.
- Drink responsibly: Margaritas can be strong, and enjoying them in moderation is important. Make sure to have a designated driver if you plan on drinking more than one.
- Make it non-alcoholic: To make a nonalcoholic version of a strawberry margarita, you can replace the tequila and triple sec with an equal amount of a nonalcoholic substitute, such as soda water.
- Make a Frozen Margarita: Blend the ingredients with ice until smooth to make a frozen strawberry margarita. Adjust the amount of ice depending on how thick you want your margaritas to be.
